Learning the 8 x table
This week we learned two strategies which will help us to understand and recall the facts of the 8 x table.
The first strategy we used to help us was ‘groupings’. We drew 10 groups and had to put 8 cubes in each group. This represents what the written maths symbols mean; for example 5 x 8 means 5 groups of 8. Then we wrote out the 8 times table with the answers that we worked out using the groupings.
The next day we learned how to recall the facts of of the 8x table using a different strategy called ‘counting on’. this is where you count in 8s until you get to your answer. for example, 7 x 8, you count in 8s 7 times; 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56.
Our next focus will be to learn the 8xtable facts so that we can answer an 8x table question as quickly as we can answer “what’s your name?”!
